I have had good results with my DSP-59+ (with the latest software
upgrade, there was a definite improvement) in improving the signal to
noise ratio of very marginal signals, and with reducing the noise on
stronger signals, providing the noise wasn't line noise or thunderstorm
static that set the receiver IF filter to ringing which is
characteristic of Kenwood and Collins filters.

The trick for a very marginal signal is to use both the AGC and NR
functions at the same time. It will make a marginal signal stick out,
but you have to accept the modified noise sound. With stronger signals
its better to use only the NR function, not the AGC function so the
noise stays further in the background. That use can make long QSOs with
10 dB S/N far less fatiguing. Then the auto notch feature can take care
of the stray carriers trying to prevent the SSB QSO from continuing.
Can't use auto notch on CW...

I am favorably impressed by the Tentec CW filter and its handling of
static. I'm not convinced the Inrad will do better, and the way the
Tentec performs, I'm not going to find out.
