[TenTec] Alternate PS for Omni VI?

Hi Casey--
You have gotten a lot of responses. In the Triton era supplies, there was
NO crowbar circuit. The purpose of a crowbar is to shut the supply down
instantly in the event of OVER VOLTAGE, not over current. Over voltage can
happen if the pass transistor shorts and will cause the supply to put 25
volts or more into the rig.
The manuals which came with almost every Ten-Tec said that a fuse was not
fast enough to provide adequate protection to a rig in the event of over
current and they sold magnetic circuit breakers for that purpose. Their
supplies all had over current protection.
The best deal I've seen in supplies from Ten-Tec is a model 280 (I think it
is), or the similar one which matches the old Omni series and has the
speaker built in. Ten-Tec had the one without the speaker for $75 in their
last posting of used equipment. If the 280 is what I think it is (may have
the wrong number) it is electrically identical to the supply which does have
the speaker and matches the black Omni rigs. Ten-Tec switched from a design
with one pass transistor in the Triton era supplies to a design with two
pass transistors in the Omni era and thereafter. Avoid any with only one
pass transistor.
Of late, there has been chatter on this reflector about the quality of the
sound from the speaker built into the supply which matches the Omni VI. I
do not know about that, but surely have no complaint about the audio from
the supply which matches the Omni-C. I have also noticed some chatter about
the newer supplies getting pretty hot. My older supplies do not run hot.
Good luck. 73 de Mike N4NT@wireco.net

Subject: [TenTec] Alternate PS for Omni VI?
Just interested if any Omni VI owners use a different supply
than the 962? If so, which ones and was their a downside in
terms of connectivity to the rig? BTW, I don't own an Omni
VI (yet), but obviously thinking about it. :)
Tnx es 73,
