Sure, reducing gain does the trick but it defeats the whole purpose of agc
and it's those strong signals that sneak up on you that really do a number
on your ears.
I've tried all manners of audio limiters. They do work but they all seem to
induce some distortion which I find more anoying than the agc. I use my MFJ
ClearTone or Mil 166 speaker which have narrow response and poor bass
response.  The agc still wimps out but I don't notice it with those
speakers. Headphones are a different matter. I simply don't recommend them
if you value your hearing.
