Doing that is like shifting gears when you have an automatic transmission.
You shouldn't have to ride the RF gain if the agc is working properly. Most
JA rigs have so much internal noise that it sometimes helps to back down the
RFG a bit to rest the ears. With the old TT rigs this noise isn't a problem
and enjoyable cw copy can be had with full RFG until someone wacks you with
a super strong signal.

Interestingly, the AGC cannot even be turned off on most of TT's older rigs.
I suppose they saw no reason to do so. Many of us remember the old tube
receivers which had no product detectors and no agc on cw or ssb. Those were
real ear blasters! Riding that RFG was in fact "the only way to go".
