Hi Frank:  Yes, that is one reason, but not the MAIN reason for using an 
antenna tuner.  In my humble opinion , the most important reason is the tremendous bandwidth the tuner affords.  With a properly designed tuner 
and transmission line, one can use a single 80 meter antenna on 160, 40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 12, and 10 meters.  I will admit, using an 80 meter antenna 
on 160 meters may not be quite as efficient as one cut for 160 meters but
it shure the beats not being able to operate on 160 meters!  If you missed
