Hello! My name is John and I am thinking of buying my first hf rig and
I want a very fine instrument! This past December, I received my technician
ticket and 2 weeks ago I passed my code. At the end of August, I will
hopefully pass my general. I enjoy practicing cw (computer, tapes, sw,
practice straight keyer) and even purchased a fine electronic keyer (Smart
Keyer III), even though I don't have a hf rig--yet. I am also on a waiting
list for a March magnetic paddle--it received 22--5s on eham.com--so I can
practice iambic sending and develop this skill. So I don't have a hf rig,
but I will have a nice keyer and paddles to practice (hi hi)! I use to be a
professional woodwind musician when I was younger and find many similarities
between music study and cw--especially the concept of practice in
preparation for the on air performance --I find this very exciting! I am
only at 5 to 6 wpm, but practice every day to learn and grow and know that
on air QSOs will accelerate all of this! I am an older newbie who is very
enthusiastic about this great hobby. When I was a musician, I realized the
importance of having fine instruments for practice and performance--if you
were fortunate enough to attain them. I knew the instruments didn't make
the music, the performer did--but fine equipment was an important part of
the equation along with practice and fortitude.

This summer I hope to sell my 35 year old Selmer Mark VI saxophone
which is similar to a ten tec rig in reputation and is most desirable. I
will use this money for an omni 6+ with the appropriate goodies. This
saxophone was a major part of my life for many years and now it will add a
new dimension to my life's enjoyment by giving me another instrument that
will serve me well in learning and enjoying this wonderful hobby.

My Elmer here in Rhode Island as told me many times of the virtues of a
ten tec rig and the company behind the name, so my mind is set. What I
want to know is how would you configure this rig if you were buying and what
would you want for cw and ssb? For example, which filters for cw and ssb
would you recommend? I know the advantage of getting and taking good advice
from those with knowledge and experience.

I have monitored this reflector for 3 months and have found it very
useful and enjoyable--thanks! It is very refreshing to find a commitment to
learning, sharing, and helping others as expressed on this reflector and I
appreciate it. I look forward to the day when I can be more than a
spectator and more of a participant--but everything takes time. Any
suggestions, comments, info, concerns that you could pass on to this
enthusiastic newbie would be greatly appreciated and thanks!
