There are lots of alternatives if you want to try contesting:
1.  go portable
2.. go mibile
3.  ask if you can observe/help at a multi-op station
4.  partnert up with a local contester and do a multi-simgle
(the last two give you the chance to learn from someone with a little more 
experience.)
