According to what I have read here on contesting.com it will be the cable in
the end. Someone had this problem a few weeks back and commented on it.

Just got my SteppIR up yesterday.  All is well, except...
 
Hooked the Orion serial port to the Steppir data in using
Steppir-supplied "K2" cable.  Set everything up according to manual, I
think.  No communication, despite power cycling, master reset, etc.
 
This is with firmware 1.371.
 
There was a lot of discussion a few months back about Orion/steppir.
One may be forgiven for naively thinking it should work out of the box
for current production.
 
Anyone know the scoop?  TIA
