[TenTec] "best performance" stage gain adjustment

Just to start a thread of discussion,
Since installing V 1.372 firmware on my Orion, I have
been thinking about what would represent the best
performance on a given band, antenna, rf gain, agc
gain, filter combination. For example I use the
cascaded 250hz roofing filter. Is there a combination
of gain settings that would tend to obviate the stage
overload caused by the amp in that filter's stage? Is
there a difference in the way you would set up stage
gains for a beam vs. a vertical vs. a pennant or K9AY
array on the rx input on a given band?
Usually I just run with the RF gain all the way up,
given the improved control in the rig, it seems to me
it would make sense to optimize the system for "best
performance". It would further be useful to store
these settings in a database and be able to recall
them for a given band/antenna/antenna input setting.
This could probably be accomplished in N4PY's software
or a similiar program for example.
How would one go about defining best performance?
How would one measure best performance in a typical
ham station?
Would there be any advantage to this approach?
Ideas?
