I am happy to see someone else came forward with this question.  Am considering 
selling my FT-1000 "made-a-"D" in favor of something new.  The review of the 
Orion in a recent QST intrigued me.  I am most critical of the receiver and the 
thought of a DSP based receiver with a real roofing filter system working in 
conjunction with one another caught my attention.  The thought of being able to 
purchase a viable piece of consumer electronics actually made in this country 
is another prime consideration.  Also, our family is from East TN, the 
Knoxville/Fountain City area which is 15 miles or so from Sevierville.

I am not a contester.  I chase DX mostly on phone but (am just about out of 
countries).  We live near the coast on a farm, plan on a major 160M effort this 
fall/winter.  Run occasional PSK31 and SSTV and am thinking of trying for RTTY 
DXCC and yes, I do sit back on a cold winters night and ragchew on 75 but that 
time is usually reserved for dusting off the boatanchors.

CW....  When WN4HHG turned into WA4HHG 30 years ago I put the key way and made 
a pact with myself that I'd never touch it again.   I also said I'd never own 
another drifty, hot rig that ran vacuum tubes..... So much for statement #2.... 
I will most likely get my key out dial my code speed back up again.  160 will 
demand it.

What is on the market and viable is the FT1000MP and the 751Pro.  Why might I 
like the Orion better?  Any feel for some answers to that question? 

How much stock is in some of the I have heard/seen concerning the Orion where 
the main point was that you have to "learn an entirely new way to use a radio." 

Am not sure if these statements are made by operators who's conception of rig 
performance is Radio "X" is better because it has 500 memories more that Radio 
"Y" and it also does 2 meters.   Conversely, were the observations mentioned 
above made by those who understand that the approach to wringing the best 
performance out of a receiver is different in on air scenario "A" v/s scenario 
"B?"

needs to exact above average performance if one will invest the time to learn 
how to use those tools and has the understanding to know how and when to apply

I also run DXBase logging software which seems to support the Orion.  Any 
comments about how well they interface?
