[TenTec] Heil ProSet adapter with Orion -- hum

I ran into the same problem with my ProSet that you did, and learned by 
trial and (much) error that figure 2-5 in the Orion manual is to be 
taken literally. The Mic ground and the shield must remain separate, or 
else you get distorted audio. I know the "whine" you wrote about as well 
- on Hamalyzer it looks like three harmonically-related tones at 
approximately 880 Hz, 1760 Hz, and 2640 Hz +/-.

The Heil adapter cables tie together the shield and Mic ground. If you 
disconnect the microphone but leave the adapter connected to the Mic 
jack, activate PTT and you can still hear these tones.

In the end I made up my own adapter cable, using two conductors for the 
microphone and one conductor plus the shield for PTT, just like figure 
2-5. After an evening of cutting, soldering, and cussing, operation is 
just what it is supposed to be.
