[TenTec] Orion, Jupiter frequency stability

I use my Orion regularly on AFMARS channels. No FYMON has yet complained about my frequency accuracy or stability. Actually, stability isn't even an issue. Accuracy, however, is ... for example, I know that after warmup that my dial reads about 30 hz low at 10Mhz. I compensate for that on 7.3 Mhz MARS channels, for example, by setting the dial 20 Hz low.

I could go in and readjust the TXCO, but it's close enough, even for government work :-)

Carl's (N4PY) computer interface has a "calibrate" function, with which you measure the frequency error at one WWV spot on the dial and then compensate for that in software. It effectively takes into account the TXCO error so that the dial (computer) is correct. It's been on my wish list for Orion firmware, too.

Many MARS members still use S-lines and other equipment with no where near the accuracy and stability of the Orion or other modern radio.
