Sorry for the trouble everyone, I found the problem.
I was feeding the box with +12v DC and it is supposed to be fed with 12 VAC.
No mention of the voltage requirements in the manual.
The Wallwart powersupply that shipped (from the states) didn't have a plug
on it so I (in my hurry) used another one, assuming it would be +12v.

Moral of the story, don't make assumptions.
