IF THE SIGNAL IS ABOVE THE RF GAIN SETTINGS..... This is precisely my point,  if the signal is NOT above the rf gain setting then NO s meter reading is available,  whether accurate or not, having the s meter to read actively all the time gives you an idea  of what the relative strength of the other stations signal is and you can quickly give him a report. 

Contesting maybe a different matter as everyone is 599,  so why would a contester need an s meter to begin with?

But for those of us who have regular QSOs and needing to give reports if is helpful to have a working s meter all the time,  not just when the RF gain is turned up high enough tor the s meter to function.  Maybe the question should be asked,  What is the S meter for anyway? ......to be able to offer signal reports,  or to see where the RF gain is set.
