Thanks for the responses. I must admit, I'm still puzzled; as Buck said, 
it seems counterintuitive. I'll study the list's comments more 
thoroughly and see if I can wrap my brain around it. (I don't use SSB 
often enough to appreciate the analogy to USB/LSB.) This U/L CW 
terminology still seems strange, but maybe I'll understand it with more 
reading and thinking.
