Finally got both the v2 Orion and the Orion II up on a multi-coupler so I
can listen on both simultaneously.
Regarding the comments about the AGC on 2.037 sounding "fast", I agree. If
one can presume that the S-meter movement is actually following AGC, the
difference between the v2 Orion and the Orion II is VERY visable also.
I'm watching S-5 to S-7 signals on 20M, with both radios' AGC set up the
same. I have SLOW AGC decay set to 5 dB, no hang, 1:10, and THRESHOLD set
to 0.6 uV. The v2 behaves the way one would expect with nice slow AGC: the
meter action is smooth with visible decay, and very little response to voice
peaks. The Orion II meter is bouncing all over the place, with very fast
decay, and is responding to voice peaks pretty much the same way regardless
of AGC speed setting. Even with decay on the II set down to 1dB, the meter
still bounces on peaks, and shows rapid decay.
The radios don't sound that much different, but meter action is another
story altogether. I "think" I hear faster decay on 2.037j, but it could be
because my eyes are tricking me.
If the meter does in fact follow AGC, I think something is amiss in 2.037j
regarding AGC decay speed settings.
I also hear some distortion fuzz on the v2 Orion using the internal speaker.
It is not present on an external speaker. This might just be something
mechanical.
