Duane,
I had a Icom ProIII prior to my Orion II.  I'm not sure what the scope was
set to when you looked at your friends rig, but I can say that the ProIII
scope works a light year or two better than the Orion's.  Much faster
response and very useable to quickly see traffic on the band.   

The Orion II is an excellent rig in every way, but the Icom's scope does
beat it hands down. Now, lets hope for a software update to fix it!
