Re the intermittent receive signal strength. You may have a bad reed relay. The reed relay shorts the Receiver input to ground when Xmiiting.When receiving the signal goes through the  reed contacts
After many cycles the contacts get corroded and give you weak signals, by cycling the xmiiter on and off it may improve a bit.
It needs to be replaced or rejuvenated.  The relay is about $30 from TT. I rejuvenated my Omni D reed relay by removing the swr board and cycling the reed relay coil about 20 to 100 Hz while running a small current ( maybe about several hundred milliamps ) through the contacts. Check with an ohmmeter occasionally until the resistance is zero. You may be able  check the resistance without diassembling any thing by measuring the resistance from the xmitt ant. jack to the receive ant. jack, at least that is how it is on my Omn D.
