You could probably achieve essentially the same result with a simple mod
to a small or moderate HIFI speaker. Open it up, unhook the tweeter, and
replace the tweeter with an 8 ohm resistor to load the cross over
network at high frequencies.
Sometimes the tuned port bass reflex speaker needs tuning. The box is
supposed to resonate at the mechanical resonance of the speaker to
flatten the response and extend some more bass. I connect a D cell
through a CW key to the speaker. When the tuned port is resonated
correctly the speaker will click cleanly at key closures and opens. When
not tuned right there will be a boom when the resonance takes over. It
takes a key, rubbing wires together isn't clean enough.
