Thanks, Hank -

I should have figured that out at the time (basically use RF gain control to keep out of whatever AGC loop/limiter is doing this) but so it goes. Anyway, no real need to do any extra research on my behalf - your brief explanation and admonition for me to RTFM is sufficient for next time around,
