[TenTec] Big TX Loops

Please keep us posted on his progress, Jim.

It is a fascinating idea.
Thinking back on many of my own portable operations, everything I owned
usually returned home with salt water spray and sand all over it. This
would be disastrous for a magnetic loop. He'll need protective covers for
all joints when not in use.

There are two interesting points to this type of antenna:
1) It covers all angles of radiation, so it is equally good for DX and NIVS
2) It can be easily made rotatable, which helps a lot compared to a
stationary dipole.

Now if somebody could only solve the problem of the need to re-tune every
few KHz, and the need for the monster capacitor...
Actually one guy claims he has solved this but I just haven't found the time
to test it.
It is way down my list, but I will certainly do it before I fully retire to
assisted living.

Yes, the difference between wood and concrete is significant -- concrete is
a conductor, so it's going to provide some shielding. Glen owns an Alex loop
that he uses QRP from hotel rooms, and it does work with wood frame
construction. All the caveats about height apply. And even in wood frame
construction there are wires.

Your points about contact resistance are well taken. Glen is a fine engineer
who has been working in the space program, holds a dozen patents. He's
studied the literature on loops, and is quite aware of these issues.
