Au contraire, JR:   Learning to copy through QRM due to barn-door 
selectivity did wonders for developing mental selectivity that aided 
contesting endeavors
tremendously.   Starting with a top level RX would not accustom one 
to this rigorous training.  Would I go back to using my old cheap 
Halli S-19R?   Not a chance
but I am very grateful for the experience I got using it.

I liken this to my xyl's (also a ham) reaction to noise and static 
that I can copy through, but she can't handle. ;-)  .
