Hmmm; after posting that last paragraph, I realize it's time for me to go to
bed.
It doesn't even make sense to me and I wrote it.  No wonder nobody else
understands it!

With just a bandmap, under certain band condx, what you see on your
Panadapter as a "clear frequency" may very well be the run frequency of a
juicy DX station, such as Spratley or Ascension Island, etc.  With a
bandmap, you would see that who else is on this frequency and know to stay
way clear of that frequency.
