Exactly correct Barry, and NO ONE is forced into using the"assisted" 
catagory either. So simply get on the bands, be the best very op you 
can be, and enjoy the time doing so, despite some of the semi-annual 
type of sadly predictable negative comments from some on here. 

Study propagation, try new antennas, new ways to operate, software,
or whatever and enjoy the hobby to the best of your situation!

Contests are what you make out of them.  95% of the time, I don't give a
hoot about my score and I use the contest as an incredible playing field to
have fun with all the sweet sounding radios on my shelf and try out
different ideas.  I still get a kick out of tuning the bands.
