For about $100 I bought one of those portable car battery starter gizmos. I love it. It works great for portable operating, it's very convenient to carry, and running my FT897 at about 50 watts it works a very long time.

Better to use a deep cycle battery. Rather than a wet cell or gel cell, I'd suggest the "AGM" (Absorbed Glass Mat) type battery or the LiFePO4 type. They have a higher energy density, though a higher cost than lead acid batteries.

This is an intelligent trickle charger that will not ultimately boil your battery dry like a conventional trickle charger. Typically about $20-25 bucks. Look up 'battery tender' on Amazon. (no connection, they just have a nice selection that will give you an idea what to look for at your neighborhood auto parts store)
