There are quite of number of stations that have extremely directive
receiving antenna
systems for topband, especially here in the US. These systems are not just
stand alone
beverages, loops, flags, pennants, simple vertical arrays, etc. I'm talking
about multiple elements used as a phased array that consists at least 2 or
more elements, depending on each antenna element is intrinsically
directional or non directional.. A array with non direction elements should
have at least 4 elements in its system to give a high degree of directivity.
Arrays could be arranged in a endfire, broadside, or combination of both.
Receiving arrays are often aimed into very quiet zones while rejecting
background noise sources (static and manmade)from all other directions. This
is where a receiver that has a quiet noise floor with good sensitivity is
desirable.
