Topband: dx despite of A-Ind 53

When i saw that a severe mag. storm occured yesterday between 18z and 21z time,i 
wondered whether any dx would show up this am.Tried the band from 0515 til 
sunrise at 0645.The numbers were 163  53  3  at that time.The only dx-station 
hrd and wkd was N3JB, he was 579 solid. Reminds me of a qso with Bill-K0HA in 
the middle of june 2 years ago.
What happened ? Was he exempted from the path attenuation somehow ?
Could it be that on a weekend with regularly good activity no one else was on ?
