There are 2 sunrise related peaks in this part of the world (and likely
elsewhere too).
Years of experience on 160M has taught me that the 2 peaks are independent
of each other. The first, of course, is the common sunrise peak at sunrise
itself. The less known phenomenon is the peak that preceeds sunrise,
usually by about 2 hours. As with the actual sunrise peak, the -2 hour peak
may or may not happen. Sometimes both of them happen, sometimes neither,
and sometimes just one or the other. The -2 hour peak, of course, is into
the area of darkness - to the West. I would estimate that during the Winter
DX season, the -2 hour peak occurs about 25% of the mornings here. I seem to
recall that this is a lesser known, but not uncommon phenomenon that has
been noticed in various parts of the world.
