Friends in Radioland -
Even better than sunrise/sunset tables is the new version (5.0) of
DXAID which will be ready for release in August. Of interest to
low-band DXers is LoProp, an improvement of the mapping utility
in DXAID. It is as close to a prediction program for low-band
DXing as you can come. Thus, it allows the user to follow the
advance of darkness over global DX paths and to vary upgrades of
the screen view both forward and backward in units of DX time
(1, 15 and 60 minutes) by using ARROW KEYS and to vary user time
steps for screen upgrades (5, 30 and 60 seconds) to suit user
needs and convenience. That allows the user to see when low-band
paths open and close as well as the directions from which QRM can
be anticipated.
The program has all the features in previous versions but the MUF
predictions now take foF2 critical frequencies directly from CCIR
and URSI reference ionospheres instead of F-layer algorithms. For
MUF predictions, that is as good as it can get. I hope to have a
more detailed review in the next issue of The DX Magazine. For
details, see the review or contact:
