Worked all 48 states and 20 countries in about 1 year. Used a low ~ 40ft dipole (1kw). The dipole was as low as 20 feet in some locations and wasn't even straight. It had a few 90 degree bends in it. So, a dipole would/will work for average stuff, but a vertical is better (as you already know). Regards, Bill K2WH
