I totally agree that line loss due to radiation is
normally miniscule. I was heavily involved in the
design of leaky feeder (radiating coax) cables when
the world was rather younger. Even when cables are
specifically designed to 'radiate', copper losses are
many orders greater than radiation losses, and
dielectric losses can usually be ignored. Balanced
lines can radiate rather more than coax when they are
unbalanced, or when the spacing becomes a significant
part of a wavelength (?BPL?) - intentionally or
otherwise - but the radiation losses are still tiny.
And just as an aside, even when coax cable has a 100%
outer conductor (ie solid copper) there will still be
an external field.
