Can't help you with SP3KEY details, but here are a few thoughts.

Since the K9AY is not an omni antenna, I guess the configuration is not 
really 4 square.  You would only need 2 K9AY's positioned broadside and 
spaced at about 100m (fed in phase) to cover a single direction.

I guess they may use 4 antennas, but two of them would have to be rotated 90 
deg.  Then you could cover 4 directions by using reversing switches and 
selecting the appropriate pair.
