Interesting and inconvenient, but I wonder if the problem is partly our expectation for the cable to encounter various temperature gradients.
There could be various expansion coefficients at play across the cable, Sheath, Braid, Dielectric (nylon/foam) and Core. When you think of the dissimilarities in everything that makes up the cable, let alone strain along the cable in manufacturing, anything could happen over time and temperature.
