Topband: CY9C

Im mostly a cw op, working 160-6m. Also do some ssb and rtty but not
much.

Never heard them on 6-10-12m, and waited until the final 3 days to
start chasing them, managing to get in their log on
160-80-60-40-30-20-17-15 meters.

But it wasnt easy.

I fully expected easy operating, and BIG openings to CY9, but that
only happened on a couple bands. Most of the time I had to hunt for
them, and work them by chasing who they worked last, and jumping in.
Actually it looked like they were sliding up or down the band a few
hundred hz after each qso, so it took a while realize that and to make
contact.

160 was the final band I worked them on, on their 2nd to last day, at
their sunrise. I woke up, made a cup of coffee and sat down with the
rig dialed to 1820.5 ( according to past spots) and a split on +1 hz.
Noise. No sigs.... But eventually I heard a carrier, then an ID by
CY9C, and a CQ listening up. Nobody came back, as my amp warmed up. A
few more CQs and he worked 1-2 stations. With many repeats. Sigs were
in the noise peaking to solid for a few seconds then down into the
noise. He replied to my 3rd call and we went back and forth til he
picked out my entire call sign. Hooray. a new one on 160.....as well
as 80-60-40-30-17 for me.

General comments regarding CY9C:
At first I was disappointed in the seeming dedication to digital, and
rarely heard cw/ssb activity. But as the days went by it was clear
that the prop was not great between Ohio and CY9. I was listening a
lot on 12m ( atno) and never heard a thing. Ever. But I did see pile
ups on digital freqs, so it appeared they were ota. I just didnt hear
them when I was listening.

I also watched their "LIVE" video hosted by W1DED and came to realize
they were hard at work trying to make qsos, on all the bands and on
cw/ssb ( which mattered most to me.) but Ole Sol wasnt cooperating.

( A couple years back I stumbled across a previous DXpedition there -
a BIG ssb sig on 6m coming in 59+ - and pounced! Got them quickly in
the log on 6 and 10 that year. So this year I was hoping to work them
on 12m, 17m, and 30m - 160m.

I wound up with all bands except 12m at the end. Not quite all but
still productive.

Despite disappointment on 12m, the fun of the chase was there, and
watching the excellent video on QRZ gave me fuller appreciation of
what they were up against and just how hard they were trying, on our
behalf!

Thanks guys!

Congrats to Mike and others logging CY9C.

Copied here in eastern KS on both CW and FT8. No luck getting a reply
with 100 w and 40 foot vertical last evening. Noted lots of QRN on the
band. Need a better transmit antenna!
