Cleaning aluminum

I picked up a KT34A and plan on using the elements on my KT34XA on a
rotating basis.  Its not real clean and I must replace the green caps.

I have steel wool, but remember someone told about using some type of liquid
(not contact paste..I have that) to assist in the cleaning?
