[TowerTalk] Fiberoptic splices

Guys,

They are installing what looks like fiber optic trunk lines in the
area.
These cables appear to be greater than 1" in diameter and must contain
a jillion fibers each.  They appear to be laying them down in 500'
lengths.

How on earth do they splice the beasties? (besides very carefully)
