There are a few ways to splice fiber optic cables. One way is to fuse
them together with an electric arc. They must be aligned under a
microscope before fusing. Another way is to insert the ends to be joined
into a prepared splice where the two polished ends meet in jelly-like
substance with the same index of refraction that the glass fiber has thus
minimizing reflections at the splice.
