I am suspicious of all the "gain" claims too. Elmer once told me to forget
about gain - the real value of a directional antenna is the front to back and
front to side attenuation. The theory is that reducing noise and QRM by 20
db or more in three out of four directions means you can hear (and therefore
work) weaker signals. To that extent, even a rotatable dipole will be better
than a vertical (forgetting take off angle for the moment).
That makes sense to me.
Is Elmer right?
