Well, first you have to believe that winning would be a good thing.  I do.  
Once over that hump, I think Fred's point is a statistical certainty.
Other things being equal, over 48 hours and 3000-4000 QSOs a few tenths of
a dB additional gain, even on just one band, would have produced two more
mults or 5 more QSOs.  The same could be said for a little better receiving
antenna on 80 or 160, too.  Tenths matter in contesting.
