hello big boy rotor owners????

i wud like to hear from a U.S. ham that has purchased a big boy.
they must be out there but the dealer at visalia dx convention
this past weekend did not name one for me!! the rotor is for
real but made in italy....it looks pretty robust but my experience
with so called hvy duty rotators has not been good!

many if not most rotor mfgs have yet to come up with a reliable rotor to
mast interface that can handle the forces created by a 40 sq ft wind load
over a period of time......for this reason i went to a k5iu rotating
twr system that has rotated flawlessly for 5 years by a hdr-300...
a rotator that i detested from a previous bad experience ..... but dick
convinced me that it wud wk well on his rotating twr system and
he was right....

the hdr is side mounted and chain connected to the rotating twr such that
the twr takes all the vertical load and the twr absorbs the rotating load
and isolates the hdr from it!! the dwn side is that the hdr cntrler box
is ancient in design, (no preset capability) far larger than it needs to be
and the hdr-300 is over priced to boot given the forgoing!

anyhow the forgoing is FWIW based on my experiences over the years......fyi
the orion mast clamp looks/seems very robust and may
do the job but i'm not sure.

ps: the best up till now has been a properly interfaced
prop pitch motor...w7ej finally came up with a good interface to rotate
his 80m yagi the entailed a splined shaft mechanism....b4 that he tore
up a number of other approches including a r-45 rotor shelf one.....
the wind actually twisted the ears off the shelf but the prop pitch motor
and shaft survived!! the big dwn side to prop pitch motors is the cntrler
design and interface but thats a story for another time!
