I had a galvanized Rohn tower up for over 30 years, and when I took 
it down, I was astonished at the good condition of the galvanizing 
and hence, the steel, even at the joints.  The tower is still lying in 
my side yard, lookin' good.  

I suspect that paint isn't necessary, but it probably shouldn't hurt.
