    Over time, crank-up cables will take a set since they are typically 
run-up and run-down to the same places. Also there is strand-to-strand 
abrasion since you probably haven't ever lubricated the cables. So the answer 
to your question is 'yes', you should change your cables. 

    Although there may not be any obvious damage, twenty years is too long. 
US Tower wants the cables (and pulleys, don't forget them) replaced every 
three years so somewhere in between is a reasonable length of cable service 
life. (BTW, Champion Radio Products has manufacturer-approved cable 
lubricant.)
