When John visited here, his response was he uses it for high angle 
radiation.

I think he also gives that response in his book.

If John is anything like me, he does most things for multiple 
reasons. That's why copying a system that is unique, or even 
publishing mainstream information on that system, tends to 
confuse and misinform so many people.

If the elevator ride was long enough, he probably would have 
covered all the thoughts he had for doing that. I'd wager some are 
good reasons (like the high angle radiation), and some are just 
justifications he made that may not have worthwhile value but let 
him justify the system to himself in some way (like getting the 
antenna over the house).
