There has always been a debate about whether or not to pin the mast in the
rotor. From personal experience, I would definitely recommend PINNING the
mast with this particular rotor. The mast clam shells on this rotor are cast
alloy, and do not tolerate being overtightened. Although I've never broken
mine, I've talked to plenty of people who have. As a result of not
overtightening the clam shells, my system can't make it through a winter
without the clam shells loosing their grip. The pin is the only thing which
keeps the mast from spinning, and no harm has come to the rotor in 3 years of
service at a ridge top QTH (read wind!). By the way, the rotor is turning a
12' mast, Force 12 C3D, 11 el 2 meter yagi, and a 17' 2M/440 vertical at the
top.
