[TowerTalk] Log Periodics

I just recently went through a fairly extensive evaluation of the best
antenna to put up (for my situation) and settled on a log. With the
understanding that everything is a compromise, I decided my goal was to
achieve the maximum number of bands possible with a high level of
performance and do it on one boom.
I settled on the M2 7&10-30 "Skip Log". I have it at 72'. I compared
it against the idea of a Tennadyne log stacked with a 40m monobander as
well as against an F12 C31 also stacked with a 40m beam. While there is
no doubt that a C31 will have better forward gain and F/B
characteristics on 20m, especially, the M2 antenna has been nothing
short of awesome so far. For my situation, having the WARC bands
available was a real plus. Adding 40m coverage was icing on the cake.
The 40m peformance of the M2 is certainly a compromise compared to a
monobander but, nevertheless surprisingly good, and there is no
comparison compared to an inverted vee at the same height or a ground
mounted vertical with an excellent radial system so I have achieved my
goal. So far, if I hear it, I can work it and that wasn't the case with
the other antennas.
In my opinion, the construction of the M2 is far superior to Tennadyne.
Whether or not you need an antenna that is as rugged as the M2 may or
may not be important however.
The M2 "Skip Log" isn't for the meek at heart. It is a pretty massive
antenna and fairly complicated to assemble. M2 could take a lesson
from F12 in that department. I will say though, that customer service
at M2 is second to none. I actually bought my antenna used and during
shipping, a few miscellaneous parts were lost. I was trying to get the
antenna in the air for CQ WWDX and the guys at M2 FED-Xed the needed
parts to me and I was on the air.
73's,
Bill, AA7X
