An interesting thread.
Out here in the "second world" there is not enough demand for any company to
manufacture stock towers and the cost of importation is uneconomic. People
design and build, with or without professional engineer's design and we get
by so long as the neighbours do not get too upset, hi!
Incidentally, when Bill Orr was out here he was amazed at some of the
hombrew tiltovers (deliberate) in this country.
Downhand welding is no great skill, and in days gone by even QST published
how to on quite substantial towers.
Here in Auckland City (popn about 400,000) there is a complex code for
towers more than 20ft above the roof line. To my knowledge there is not a
single legal or illegal ham tower in the city. If you take a proposal in to
the City they prefer not to know. And if your station is part of the
Emergency System, well, it must be approved by the City, as it is part of
their own system.
On this island the neighbours would cut your feeders if you got into their
TV too much, but would set the dogs on anyone who tried to make you take the
tower down.
