Few more things not mentioned:

Safer way of home brewing tower is to use solid telescoping tube material, 
like Telrex Big Bertha used to be. You can stick it in the ground tube and 
rotate the whole tower. Limited, not to stressed welding involved. Just make 
sure material is decent construction steel. Beautiful, self supporting 
rotating thing. I loved it. I could do all the antenna work myself. Bill 
Brown W0SYK had article in 73 mag on how he made his 110 ft version. See

Another alternative especially for DX minded - go verticals. Lay extensive 
ground screen and plant bunch of phased verticals. No problems with safety 
and idiots. Put flags on them and let the municipality challenge you on your 
patriotism :-) Who needs towers?
