Being an old motorcyclist/racer, I know what chain lube is like.  The
good stuff has Moly in it.  I'd never put anything as sticky and gooey
as that on my cables.  It will penetrate nicely, as the thread has said
all along, but the goop it leaves will do just what Steve is talking
about.  I have lots of blowing dirt here on the western plains, and my
cable looks slightly dirty even when using Prelube on it.  I wipe and
brush the dirt off the cable that I can reach and on the drum.
