[TowerTalk] Crappy Welds?

Hi Kurt,

I basically agree with your observations on the Rohn sections I sent back to Rohn.
They never sent me any acknowledgement (other than sending me replacement sections at
no charge) of the problem. I thought the problems I saw were strictly due to shipping
damge and you're right, you could not be certain there was any actual "weld damage".
We definitely saw cracks but how deep did they go? I have no way of knowing and Rohn's
suggestion is not to use any sections like these . . . but then they are
super-conservative about this sort of thing . . . or are they? I suppose one could
strip off the galvanizing and really do a good inspection of the welds but the cost
would probably outweigh just replacing them with new ones.

Since those pictures were posted, I got an email from a VP at Rohn who wanted more
info. I sent him to the web site that posted the pictures and that is the last I ever
heard from him, too.

I have also received one more damaged section with similiar cracks in the galvanizing
or welds. This one is a 55G section. There was no way to tell who damaged this one
(Rohn or the shipping company) nor how serious the damage really is. I took photos,
sent them to Rohn, and they said there was no repair for it. We have a claim in with
the shipping company right now and they tried to get us to reduce our claim to
something less than full replacement value and we offered to give them the damaged
section . . . they are paying us full value at my cost . . . and they don' want the
damaged section.
