Gary- I have a 48 ft Rohn fold-over, and the book- I installed the tower,
by myself, at the age of 71, so the design is effective. I have a
tri-bander and a 6 meter yagi on the mast, and can work on them easily.
The fold-over design uses standard parts for all but the hinge section, and
comes in three standard designs. The basic one is 48 ft, and , by adding
one extra 10 ft section, below the hinge, it becomes the 58 ft version; by
adding another, above the hinge, it is 68 ft. Unlike the other Rohn
designs, it uses four guys per level, with a reduced anchor radius. One set
of guys goes to the hinge joint, and another to the top section.
On the 48 ft type, the hinge is at 22.5 ft. This can vary some, depending
on the type of base section you use. The top section is a vatriable, also,
since standard parts are used for all but the hinged part. I used the
"hinged" base plate (because I had it) and the tapered top that accepts the
"thrust" bearing.
THe hinge section has almost a standard section above and below the hinge,
with a beam fastened to the upper part, coming down past the hinge. This
beam is what the erection cable attaches to, to lower and raise the top. In
operation, the end of the beam is unbolted from the lower section ( at
about chest height, on the 48 ft one, but ten ft higher on the others) and
the cable is let out by the winch. two of upper guys must be disconnected
to let the top go over.
I hope this helps- if you need more- let me know , by direct e-mail. I have
no idea what a fair price is for a used one, but the list for the 48 ft was
$1500 last year.
It works for me.
